mild hypocrisy in action
I would just like to point out that before he went to Toledo yesterday, McCain was campaigning in Westerville, Ohio, where he reportedly said he was campaigning “on behalf of Joe the Plumber and Rose the Teacher and Phil the Bricklayer and Wendy the Waitress.”
Here’s the thing, dudes. Westerville? My grampa used to live there, so I am familiar with the place. It’s not, on the whole, a poor town. Median income in between $70 & $80K, according to Wikipedia. It is in fact a ritzy bedroom community to Columbus, where people can live out in the country a little bit and still commute into Columbus to be lawyers and whatnot. In the subdivision where my grampa lived, people had maids and groundskeepers. Even today it’s on Money Mag’s list of places to live.
In other words, those waitresses McCain was talking about? Yeah, they probably commute in from downtown Columbus.
I can’t say I’m terribly surprised, but sheesh. I still don’t know when this “middle class” turned into the “upper middle class to pretty wealthy”.

Upper middle class to pretty wealthy who have half a heart: they at least want to be reassured that their vote for McCain won’t screw over the plumbers and teachers and bricklayers and waitresses, even though it will.
Yeah, that whole thing of McCain saying to Joe the Plumber who ostensibly “made” $250K (when in reality he makes $40K which is actually average for Americans), “Joe! You’re rich!” pissed me off something dreadful. Hell yeah, if you’re making $250K, you’re rich & you damn well better be able to afford a little more in taxes to carry the weight of what your likely footprint is on this planet!
Old McCain doesn’t have any idea what real people make anymore. Completely not in touch with normal folks…
Not that I’ve followed the story closely, but there’s a heck of a big difference between your business pulling in $250K and you personally making that much money, too. Presumably sinks don’t plumb themselves.
Yeh, on further info the unlicensed plumber dude who didn’t really make $250K… the business was only actually netting something closer to $100K.
