Brokeback
While I agree with my friends who said “hot gay cowboys – how can you go wrong?” and with my other friends who said that it was basically a soap opera on horseback, mostly I just found Brokeback Mountain to be very, very sad.
I also, after seeing the credits, faintly remember reading the Annie Proulx story that it was based on when it first came out in the New Yorker, though clearly it didn’t make much of an impression on me.
Your friends at Wikipedia have a nice round-up of the criticism and controversy, pro- & con-.

Me and my mom got all sniffly.
We also wanted to smack Ennis upside the head more than once. Of course without an emotionally repressed character, it wouldn’t be an Ang Lee movie; the story was tailor-made for him.
