Overheard on the radio, and on volunteering
“blah blah oil blah terrierism blah blah war blah blah for those nations … that don’t like us”
– George W., on the radio
Yeah, that would be the great nation of the motherfucking WEST COAST, Mr. Prez.

I was super cranky yesterday, less so today. This is a good thing, the being less cranky. I’m getting work done and actually woke up on time. I had a therapeutic talk about volunteering and the politics thereof with my father yesterday, who has done innumerable volunteer jobs and had advice to give — mostly, advice that made me laugh and backed up my own cynicism, but hey, what else are fathers for? “Volunteers are so frustrating,” he said. “Yeah,” I said — “the really hard-core ones are always way more invested in their project that someone would be who was just doing it for a job, and so they take everything much more personally.” “They’ve always got this evangelistic streak” my father agreed. “Especially the ones who think they’re changing the world. They just know that they can *feel* their wings sprouting as they work.”
I laughed, and laughed, and everything was all better.
Also, he is snowed in! In Arkansas!! Apparently it got down to 3 last night! Also, it is in the low 20′s in Seattle. I know ya’ll east coasters and northerners are like, whatever… but trust me, it’s cold for those places. It’s even cold here, maybe in the lowish 50s? Oh man, I might have to put on a sweater.
